Day Trip to Nicaragua from Playas del Coco Costa Rica

Fuel Up for the Day Ahead

Once we have crossed the border into Nicaragua we will fuel up for the big day ahead. First things first, we’ll kickstart our adventure with a hearty breakfast. Once you’ve got your energy levels up, it’s time to hit the road and experience the cities, lakes, lookouts, and volcanos of Nicaragua.

Stop #1: Catarina Lookout – A Panoramic Paradise

As we ascend to one of the highest points in the area, Catarina Lookout unveils a stunning panorama that will leave you breathless. Perched atop the rugged cliffs overlooking Apoyo Lagoon, the vista stretches far and wide, offering a bird’s-eye view of the shimmering waters below. Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America, sprawls out in the distance.

But the beauty doesn’t end there. Grenada City, with its colonial charm, can be seen in the distance, while the imposing silhouette of Mombacho Volcano dominates the horizon. As you soak in the awe-inspiring scenery, take a moment to browse through the market stalls nearby, where local vendors display their handicrafts and souvenirs. Think handmade textiles, intricately carved souvenirs, and maybe even a cheeky bargain or two.

Stop #2: Masaya Volcano – Nature’s Fiery Spectacle

Prepare to witness the raw power of Mother Nature as we venture to Masaya Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. As we approach the volcanic slopes, a sense of anticipation fills the air, mingled with the smell of sulfur. The landscape transforms before your eyes into a moonscape of rugged terrain and ancient lava flows.

Stepping onto the viewing platform, you’re greeted by the sight of the immense Santiago crater. With wisps of gas rising up from the depths, it’s like something out of a movie. Keep your camera handy because this is one photo-worthy moment you won’t want to miss.

Lunch Break

After exploring the volcanic wonders, it’s time to refuel with a hearty lunch that will recharge your batteries for the adventures ahead.

Stop #3: Granada – Colonial Splendor

Nestled on the shores of Lake Nicaragua lies the historic city of Granada, a city that’s as rich in history as it is in charm. Founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors, Granada is like a living, breathing time capsule. With cobblestone streets, majestic cathedrals, and brightly colored buildings, it’s like stepping back in time.

After wandering through the heart of the city, we’ll visit the iconic Chocolate Museum, where you’ll learn about the ancient origins of chocolate and indulge in locally sourced treats. Don’t miss the chance to explore the Cigar Museum, where you’ll learn a thing or two about the art of cigar making and even sample some of Nicaragua’s finest tobacco blends if you’re game.

Stop #4: Lake Nicaragua and the Granada Islets – Island Paradise

Last but definitely not least, it’s time to hit the water and explore the Granada Islets. Picture yourself cruising along the glassy surface of Lake Nicaragua, with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. The islets are like something out of a fairy tale. With 365 islets, there is one for every day of the year!

As you sail past opulent mansions and quaint fishing villages, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. You might spot colorful birds swooping through the trees or playful monkeys swinging from branch to branch. And when you reach “Monkey Island,” get ready for some up-close-and-personal encounters with these cheeky little critters. Snap photos of the furry residents or simply bask in this island paradise before we bid farewell to Lake Nicaragua and begin our journey back to Playas del Coco, Costa Rica.

Heading Back to Costa Rica

As the day comes to a close, we’ll make our way back to the border to cross back into Costa Rica. Sit back, relax, and reminisce about the incredible experiences you’ve had throughout the day. Feel free to grab a quick dinner or to-go meal on the way back to your lodging, where we’ll arrive between 8 pm and 9 pm.
